Gamers have been praying for a videogame-to-film adaptation that properly brings their favorite pixel-based mythologies to the silver screen ever since Christopher Nolan's Batman films proved that the same can be done for comic books.

If the following trailer is any indication, Mortal Kombat fans might be getting their violent magnum opus soon enough.

Early reports on what exactly this clip depicts were disputed throughout the jaded Internet underground, but genre film hub CHUD.com now claims that this is a legit trailer for a new Mortal Kombat film which attempts to relaunch the movie line with all the grit and violence you'd expect from a series whose fame springs almost entirely from its affection for decapitation, arterial spray and ninjas who throw spears at your goddamn throat.

I reserve the right to slam this movie as shit (and claim I suspected as much all along) until I've spent 2 hours in a theater with it, but the talent pedigree behind this project has me cautiously optimistic. CHUD has word that the film's creative staff includes Black Dynamite co-creator/star Michael Jai White and Larnell Stovall, the bad ass fight choreographer behind the way-better-than-a-DTV-action-film-has-any-right-to-be Undisputed 3: Redemption.

I could only possibly be more excited for this if Tony Jaa left the monastery to play Kung Lao.
