That's the frightening news out today from the Center for Responsible Lending's study of the mortgage crisis.

Here's their chart that goes straight to the heart:

We reported in 2008 on the higher rates of foreclosure among Portland's African-American and Latino communities. A big part of the problem? Black people and Latinos got worse loans in Oregon (and nationwide) than white people. The Oregon Center for Public Policy looked analyzed loans and race, finding that people who were black or Latino were twice as likely to get a subprime loan than a white person of the same income level.

Meanwhile, last week City Commissioner Nick Fish helped kick off "Operation Stolen Dreams", a nationwide FBI effort to crack down on lying lenders. In Oregon, according to the FBI, 39 people in the past three months have been charged with or convicted of mortgage fraud.

Now is definitely the time to repost this excellent illustration, from back in January when Oregon closed a major loophole that had previously allowed fraudulent lenders off the hook.
