Timbers vs. Sounders. AKA Good vs. Evil. Tonight.

Posted by Brian Costello on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 8:30 AM

I must break you.
  • Allison Andrews
  • I must break you.

People! PEOPLE! This is a big one.

This is USA vs. CCCP.
Hatfield's vs. McCoy's.
Brooks vs. Sumner.
Fire vs. Ice.
Ali vs. Foreman.
Cat vs. Dog.
Up vs. Down.
Swearengen vs. Hearst.
Spy vs. Spy.
Henry V vs. Charles d'Albret.
Simon vs. Garfunkel.
Nixon vs. Frost.
Kramer vs. Kramer.
Luke vs. Vader.
Oil vs. Water.
Candy vs. Ass.

This is Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. I could tell you that today is the first day in two and a half weeks without a World Cup game on T.V. and so you should go to feed that soccer withdrawl. I could tell you that the Timbers have been playing some great soccer of late winning their last three games (two U.S. Open Cup and one league match) and that though Seattle are defending Open Cup Champions, their 2010 regular season campaign has, to date, been a slog of disappointment.

I could also tell you that this is the premier rivalry in North American soccer with over thirty five years of history and that PGE Park will be packed to the rafters with an unbelievably lively environment.

Or I could just say:

Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders.
Tonight.
PGE Park.
7:30 p.m. (gates open at 6:00 p.m.)
Tickets start at $15 in advance.

Game also on the telly on FSN, on the radios on 95.5 The Game with Spanish language broadcast on 910AM+1390AM ESPN Deportes, and the internets.

For an excellent and much less-hyperbolic preview, check out the great Kip Kesgard's summation here.
