Cory Branan comes through town tonight to play the first of two nights at the White Eagle.
And just who is Cory Branan anyway? Don't hold the name against him: He's not the missing teen-idol link between Haim and Feldman, but rather a rootsy singer/songwriter from Mississippi. He hangs out with Lucero. He gets covered by Dashboard Confessional (it happens to the best of us). As a kid, Branan listened to a bunch of John Prine and seemed at one point to be on the same steady path as Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst, according to a
Rolling Stone writeup. Thankfully, he didn't follow in either of their footsteps. He released a stellar album called
12 Songs back in 2006, and has yet to follow it up with another full-length, to the best of my knowledge (a split EP with Drag the River's Jon Snodgrass notwithstanding). He's a friend to moose, to fans of
real country, to whiskey drinkers everywhere. See him tonight, or tomorrow, or both. Here's one of the 12 excellent songs from
12 Songs.
