Homo / Politics England to Foreign Gays: Your Kylie Fetish is Welcome Here

The highest-court-in-the-land over there—in the UK—just ruled that gay people fleeing persecution have a right to asylum in Great Britain. Apparently he was swayed by a recent marathon viewing of Sex and the City. If this is to be believed:

Supreme Court judge Lord Rodger said gay people’s right to live freely must be protected. He said: “Just as male hetero sexuals are free to enjoy themselves playing rugby, drinking beer and talking about girls with their mates, so male homosexuals are to be free to enjoy themselves going to Kylie concerts, drinking exotically-coloured cocktails, and talking about boys with their straight female mates.”

The gays and lesbians fleeing Iran, Nigeria, Uganda, Saudi Arabia—anti-gay persecution correlates strongly with miserable, backwards shithole, huh?—are on the run because they're being denied the right to drink electric-blue martinis and dish dirt with the girls. The ruling is correct, and for that we're grateful, but the reasoning is kind of cracked. Gay people are desperately trying to escape Iran because they fear execution, not beer and compulsory conversations about rugby.

And for the record: I've never been to a Kylie concert (but I did have a drink with her in the lobby of a London hotel once), and I usually don't talk about boys with my straight female friends... but I did enjoy an exotically-coloured cocktail last night.
