Swankier Light Rail Projects For The Future?

Portland TriMet has a new Executive Director of Capital Projects: Dan Blocher. Capital Projects is a division of TriMet that works on building and engineering transportation projects around Portland. They've done all the light rail projects, including the Westside Light Rail, the West Commuter Rail, and the I-205 Green Line that just opened.

As new Executive Director, Blocher will be overseeing all these projects. Right now he's got the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project to keep him busy.

Blocher has been with TriMet for 15 years prior to being selected as Executive Director. He took two years away in 2000 to work on a major train project in the UK going from London to Glasgow.

TriMet spokesperson Mary Fetsch sounds appropriately excited about the new appointment, "He's great to work with and he brings tremendous experience and leadership to the table."

This TriMet passenger is also pretty excited:

Buses.

You know, those things that can change routes and can run on the roads.

Stupid fucking lightrail. How long until bus fare is 3$ and frequent service means every half hour? At this point there are 4 bus lines ten minutes from my house, none of which are frequent service with the recent cuts. On the other hand, I'm saving money and all the bike riding is great so Trimet slowly killing itself doesn't really effect me, but no one seems to care that all they've done lately is make it easier for people in the burbs to get here and harder for us to get around in our own city. If the lightrail was a separate payment like the BART is bus fare could actually be reasonable.

Looking at the numbers, with the new fares and reduced routes driving or at least fuel use is up in Portland from two years ago.

oh good, the guy who participated in the West Coast Mainline upgrade. So that means all work will take place on holiday weekends and the price will go up by ridiculous amounts. Oh and we'll be crushed in like sardines on failing stock. I can't wait!
