Here is Your TriMet Fare Increase Protest Song

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Wed, Sep 1, 2010 at 12:42 PM

Everyone got your nickle for today's absurd new bus ticket price, $2.05? Commenter Reymont posted this gem of a banjo-strumming fare-increase protest song yesterday on my post about the increase. May it get stuck in your head for the entirety of your bus ride!

My protest is walking back home. ~5 miles, but if I keep this up for ~5 days Tri-met won't have that extra nickle for my working commute.

Haha - awesome! That song is from 1948. Does this qualify me to be the new music intern?

My protest was to buy 20 tickets yesterday before the fare increase came into effect. That one dollar difference is going to bring down the Trimet board, mark my words.

[Nickel-less riders forced to overpay] – [Portlanders saying fuck it & walking/biking in the rain] + [something, something] = profit!

Amazing that people then actually could write non-neurotic songs, sing them with fine musicianship, and project themselves as non-paranoid stage presences.

Not to mention vastly superior recording technique.

Day of the 78 and 45!

I've always been a bigger fan of the Dropkick Murphys' version of that song.

...and it was co-written by a Lomax (daughter of John, sister of Alan) who lived in Portland until her death last year!
