Catholic Charity Pulls Funding from Rose City Resource for Listing Planned Parenthood

For the past five years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development donated to help put out the Rose City Resource, a pocket-sized handbook Street Roots publishes with lists of things homeless people might need, like low-cost healthcare and public toilets.

But today Street Roots announced that the Catholic charity has dropped its funding for the guidebook because it refused to erase Planned Parenthood from its healthcare listings. Over the past five years, the Catholic charity has donated $40,000, so now Street Roots is out that money for deciding to support access to comprehensive women's healthcare.

"It was never a question," says Street Roots editor Israel Bayer. There's no way the guidebook was going to back down from listing Planned Parenthood.

Pulling funding from an organization that provides essential help for homeless people? That doesn't seem like the Christian thing to do. Good on Street Roots for having the backbone to defend Planned Parenthood, even at the risk of losing funding in this tight economy. To help make up the difference, you can donate to the resource guide here.

Actually it does seem the Christian thing to do. Sorry, it just does.

Effectively censoring a publication that lets homeless people find resources just because it includes something you don't agree with is the Christian thing to do?

I thought that was the opposite of the Christian thing?

Oh shoot, looks like the Christian dogma might be a self-contradictory pack of crap. OH, NO!

@moehong. It's the christian thing to do because being an asshole is the christian thing to do. For example, if someone says they are a really nice person but then repeatedly bangs each one of your girlfriends/boyfriends no matter how many time you ask them not to, well then they are obviously, an asshole.

@BruceWang-- I can't help it if you girl/boyfriends like me. They were excellent in bed and I wanted to see if their performance would improve with practice.

They donated 40,000 dollars to help the homeless over a 5 year period because they ostensibly agreed with the intent of the project; however, why should they as pro-lifers be beholden to continue supporting a project that lists Planned Parenthood when 80% of all its services are elective abortions? That would be like bemoaning Muslims or Jews withdrawing support for a festival that started serving pork.

What is happening here is free speech, the freedom to not be forced by either the government or lynch mobs to support polices you do not agree with. I am not agree with the decision but we should not get too angry with them or we might risk our ribaldry turning into outright prejudice.
