News Vigil Planned for Woman Killed in SW Barbur Crash

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition just announced that they'll be holding a memorial next Monday, December 20th, for 26-year-old Angela Burke, who was run over on SW Barbur this week. The driver in the crash, Caleb Pruitt, appears to have been intoxicated and is being held on charges of criminally negligent homicide.

In cooperation with Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. and Friends of Barbur, a quiet vigil for Angela Burke and all who have lost someone close to them on the roadway will be held Monday at 5:30 pm, tentative location near the corner of SW Barbur Boulevard and SW Hamilton. Participants are encouraged to bring a candle, lights, and personal signs commemorating Angela, a loved one or call for safer streets.

Bike Portland talked with Burke's mother and posted a short portrait of who she was:

Angela was from Albany, NY. Ms. Burke said Angela packed up and moved here after finishing college. "She just did this huge trip and moved out there, she was so brave. She knows a million people out here, but we have no one out there." ...

With an eye toward getting a degree from Reed College in environmental studies, Angela was working two jobs; one as a house painter and a second job as a barback the the Aloft Hotel at Cascade Station out by the Portland Airport. Angela was on her way home — trying to cross Barbur to get her unit at the Greenbriar Apartments (5132 Southwest Slavin Rd) — when she was hit on Wednesday night.
