Update in NYE Police Shooting: Officer Intentionally Shot at Suspect

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Mon, Jan 3, 2011 at 3:00 PM

According to Police Chief Mike Reese, Friday night's fatal melee outside Club 915 involved a police officer intentionally shooting at a suspect, not accidentally firing his weapon as Mayor Sam Adams stated over the weekend.

In a media Q&A this afternoon, Chief Reese said that Sgt. Mike Fort fired one shot at the suspect in the New Years Eve shooting, while the suspect was shooting at the bouncer who died from his wounds. Sgt. Fort had a "clean 'backstop'", meaning no one was behind him, and when the shooter took off running, Fort chased him to Lownsdale Park, near the courthouse, and called for reinforcements who eventually arrested the guy.

These details are important because, as previously noted, it would be seriously problematic if an officer accidentally fired his gun into a crowd.
