New Starbucks Logo: CONDEMN OR ALLOW??

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 1:13 PM

Apparently Starbucks did not learn anything from the great GAP logo debacle of 2010, and decided to change their branding anyway (sans their name). Regardless, here it is:

So what do you say this time, internetters?
NEW STARBUCKS LOGO: CONDEMN OR ALLOW??

As always your in-depth critique of Starbucks, advertising, coffee, and design is welcome in the comments.

This is a clear evolution and refinement of their logo going back 40 years. I sort of think it's stupid to remove the name of the company from the logo, but I'm sure that'll allow them better branding in the international arena.

Rare sentiment, but here goes:

Complete agreement with DamosA.

I m with both DamosA and Commenty Colin. I really can't be bothered to give a shit about this.

That said, it looks like the flag of an imaginary obscure island nation.

I like it because they've done away with all the words. Words suck.

Does this mean Starbucks is a secret bar now and the Oregonian will do a front-page article about it?

Now we'll NEVER know whether she has a vagina or not.

@Todd: It's plainly evident, from the first two logos, that she does not. Unless it's around back...

From a graphic designer/illustrator's perspective, I don't quite understand the logic in abandoning the previous logo for the new one. The previous one is iconic, immediately recognizable, visually well-balanced and very legible. The new one, while still recognizable to most of the western world within the context of Starbucks' branding, seems a little abstract. And I agree with Graham; removing the company name from the logo is just retarded.

That illustrated history seems like a really great visual metaphor for the continual dumbing-down of everything. In thirty more years, the logo will be just an amorphous green dot.

I like it. The only thing that could have been better would have been for them to revert back to their first logo, but that might have been a little too crazy.

Yeah, all snark aside (which is very tough for me) it's not too bad, as global corporate logos go.

@RO: Nice! Here's a similar Firefox logo:
