To remember the day in 1942 when President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which led to the incarceration of 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, Oregon Nikkei Endowment (ONE) will host famed actor and activist George Takei at a special fundraiser on February 19, 2011. The evening will feature a conversation with Mr. Takei, entertainment, and a chance to meet the actor best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the Star Trek series and Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer (LGBTQ) community activist. The event will take place at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront beginning at 5pm. Tickets are $100 per person and are available online at www.oregonnikkei.org.

Best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in Star Trek, actor George Takei's acting career spans more than five decades. He and his family spent five years during World War II incarcerated in American concentration camps in Rohwer, Arkansas and Tule Lake, California. Takei is chairman emeritus of the Japanese American National Museum, he chairs the council of governors of East West Players, the nation's foremost Asian Pacific American theater, and he is a member of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender political organization. An advocate for marriage equality, Takei married his longtime partner, Brad Altman, on September 14, 2008, at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
