Alison, I hadn't read it that way, but that makes some sense. I'll admit to not knowing historically what the consequences really would have been for a women dressing up in an Al Jolson costume. I suppose it could have been used against someone in such an obviously intolerant place and time, but personally I associate women costuming themselves in men's clothes closely with the Weimar era.
