The first indication of what J.J. Abrams' Super 8 might hold? That lightning-quick flash of the Amblin logo at the start, which effectively causes—for me at least—a giddy, knee-jerk rush of nostalgia.
Out of... well, just about everyone in Hollywood, Abrams is apparently the only guy who's good at keeping secrets, especially in terms of how he markets his films. This is how you sell a movie, but keep the movie-going experience a surprising one: You show just enough footage of a project to let people know they want to see it, and not a second more.
That's how I feel about Super 8, anyway, but then, I'm an easy sell—as a tiny little movie dweeb who grew up in the late '80s and early '90s idolizing Spielberg, and now a 31-year-old movie dweeb who's a massive Abrams fan, the appeal of an '80s-style Spielberg movie directed by Abrams is a no-brainer.
