It's National Coming Out Week! ... For Undocumented Kids

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Fri, Mar 18, 2011 at 3:29 PM

This week the Immigrant Youth Justice League is sponsoring a scary-but-inspiring event: National coming out week for children of undocumented immigrants.

Undocumented kids have been coming out more and more about their status in recent years, in part to help push for the Dream Act (the New York Times did a big piece about coming out as illegal in LA last fall). All week long, the blog ColorLines has been publishing stories from people coming out.

Here in Portland, a handful of young "paperless" people went public in December to stage a mock graduation downtown in support of the Dream Act.

Congress failed to pass the act nationally, but now there's a bill in the Oregon House that would establish "tuition equity"—letting undocumented kids who graduate from Oregon high schools to pay in-state tuition at Oregon schools. According to the university system's estimate, the bill would make the state money.
