Good Match-Day, News! Portland Hopes Keeping It Real Goes Right

Posted by Brian Gjurgevich on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 2:24 PM

The loudest voice (and arguably most awesome stance) in that little video there is Timbers coach John Spencer, offering his team some, ahem, words of encouragement during a drill on Friday.

And he's right: The Timbers "gotta be ... ready" for perhaps the realest team in the league when Portland hosts Real Salt Lake at 7:30 tonight (ROOT Sports on TV, 95.5 on your FM dial) at the House of Pane for the first of three matches in seven days.

The home pitch has been friendly to Portland (2-3-1), which is undefeated in front of its raucously rambunctious crowd. But RSL (4-0-0) is undoubtedly one of the top clubs in MLS, and the 2009 champs carry an impressive 18-game regular-season unbeaten streak while remaining no less dangerous despite leaving a few starters back in SLC.

After a week of hand-wringing following a rough loss at Los Angeles, there's plenty of intriguing storylines bubbling to the surface of Jeld-Wen Field: How will the Timbers respond after the theme of the week was the team's (lack of) mental toughness, particularly after giving up early goals? Can Real Salt Lake's depth drown out the Portland crowd? Will we see Designated Player Diego Chará in the starting lineup? What about SuperDraft pick Darlington Nagbe? And, seriously, is there no place to get some good Colombian food around here?

Mucho, mucho mas on the match after the jump, including *bilingual audio interview* with Chará, a special pre-game tribute to Timbers Army royalty Gisele Currier and EXTRA TIME links to toughen you up before first kick. Be fookin' ready.

Good Morning, News!

Posted by Denis C. Theriault on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 10:53 AM

Why did so many people die in this week's Southern tornado apocalypse—even with days of warning that a killer storm system was brewing? Location, location, location. Many of the 150 TWISTERS SMASHING ACROSS EIGHT STATES took direct aim at big and medium-size cities, cities where the houses aren't built with places to hide—places like basements. President Obama has promised federal aid to thousands left homeless, saying “We’re going to make sure you’re not forgotten.”

Moammar Qaddafi still won't move out,
but in a bizarre speech says he's tired of fighting and wants to talk things over. Libya's rebels give him the finger.

A top nuclear adviser to Japan's prime minister has resigned, over the government's approach to setting acceptable radiation levels in schools. They're calling it a "misunderstanding."

It's that time of the year again. Right on time for sunshine and bird whistles, the Taliban is announcing the start of its spring offensive.

In other terroristically important news, German police busted up an Al-Qaida bombing plot and seized a stockpile of nasty explosives.

Israel is all, like, "What's up with the new Egypt?"

Michele Bachmann, because she's that kind of politician, says something that's nothing like the Holocaust is, in fact, exactly like the Holocaust.

Kids are rubes. A New York City third-grader sells a 9 mm to a classmate for THREE MEASLY DOLLARS.

Inquiring minds want to know: Did a pair of on-duty traffic cops in Los Angeles make a porno?

In local insanity, a TriMet train operator explains how he managed not to run over a woman who tumbled motionless onto the tracks.

How serious is Eileen Brady about taking on Sam Adams? She says a decision's a month away, but she's gone ahead and started a fund-raising committee just in case.

Frank Cassano's "Blogtown in Review"

Posted by Frank Cassano on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 7:02 PM

FRANK CASSANO
  • FRANK CASSANO
Like the colicky infants of inbreds, the Mercury imbeciles continue to screech incessantly about nothing in particular, desperate for anyone to pay them heed. Do not.

• Noted anti-Semite Alison Hallett inspired an insipid comment thread in which Blogtown's navel-gazers giddily engaged in a simpering hand-wringing contest.

• Ezra "Ace" Caraeff ceased whimpering about his incompetent Trail Blazers for just long enough to point out that the music venue Berbati's has returned. ATTN. BERBATI'S BOOKERS: You know what to do.

NewsRadio superfan Courtney Ferguson worried that "comedian" Andy Dick was missing somewhere in Portland. Not even Andy Dick cares where he is, you dolt.

• In a "news" story that read like a particularly painful Portlandia skit, Denis C. Theriault reported that Portland city employees are fatties, despite an initiative involving Zumba classes.

• Speaking of Mr. Theriault, he lost on Jeopardy! this week, humiliating and disappointing his family, his employer, and his adopted city. Yet, bewilderingly: The inept Wm. Steven Humphrey refused to fire him. Hot tip, Mr. Theriault: Perhaps next time you appear on an internationally renowned television program that relies heavily on historical trivia, you should study some fucking historical trivia instead of blabbering on about whatever the shit a Zumba is.

• The cretinous Ned Lannamann called your father a hipster or something. That reminds me: I highly recommend the Firefox plug-in that automatically scrolls past anything containing Mr. Lannamann's byline.

• Somehow lowering the Mercury's standards to subterranean levels, Erik Henriksen accused a fictional comic book character of being a pedophile.

• Marjorie Skinner was even more useless than usual this week; while I shall not complain about her blessed silence, I can only hope it is due to her preparations for her upcoming appearance on Let's Make a Deal.

POST-SCRIPT: In regards to local media personalities who don't make you want to shove rusty bits of barbed wire into your ear canals, Steph Stricklen, the loveliest lady in Portland, revealed on her scintillatingly saucy Twitter feed that she will be anchoring a newscast beginning in September... and will continue hosting the delightful program Live @ 7 to boot! Please join me in congratulating Portland's favorite news vixen on her much-deserved success. Ms. Stricklen, I look forward to purchasing you a fine steak dinner, over which you and I shall discuss this exciting news... amongst other things.

  • The Timbers train on Friday morning at the House of Pane in preparation for their Saturday night match against Real Salt Lake.

Too soon?

In case you didn't hear, the Trail Blazers were unceremoniously bounced from the the NBA Playoffs last night.

So, what to do with your irrational fanaticism? Well, the Timbers are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, when they host CONCACAF Champions League finalist Real Salt Lake at the House of Pane.

RSL is legit, undefeated in MLS play so far and likely still fuming a bit after dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Monterrey in the decisive leg of the CONCACAF Champions League finals on Wednesday.

The Timbers, meanwhile, are coming off a rough 3-0 shellacking in Los Angeles last weekend, but are unbeaten within the friendly confines of Jeld-Wen Field. More on this something-has-to-give match tomorrow, including a live-blog of all the high-pitched action.

Until then, put the high tops under the bed and grab your scarf: The Timbers are officially the only game in town.

Do High Taxes Really Make People Pick Up and Move?

Posted by Denis C. Theriault on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 3:28 PM

It's obviously been a while since Oregonians passed Measures 66 and 67, ballot items that hiked taxes on the wealthiest among us and also increased the minimum tax that corporations must pay, to plug a part of a state budget gap and avoid other cutbacks. But the claim offered up by opponents of the measure—that the measures are driving rich people and their businesses out of the state—refuses to go quietly.

Usually, though, the claim is buttressed with anecdotal evidence—if that. Back in February, you might remember a KGW story that supposed such a migration. The story wasn't right. It even came up earlier in February, during a Mercury-Oregon Bus Project Brewhaha with four state lawmakers. In a discussion on taxes, Democratic Representative Lew Frederick asked Republican Representative Patrick Sheehan to cite examples of jobs lost because of the measures. Sheehan couldn't, off the top of his head, and later sent the Mercury printouts from some 2010 Oregonian and Portland Business Journal stories in which a small number of businesses fretted about the hikes.

Okay. But what does science say? (Besides that revenue from the measures didn't come in as high as hoped.) NPR this morning featured a couple of studies that have attempted to actually quantify the issue. The gist, according to one of the study's authors?

There may be plenty of reasonable arguments for avoiding new taxes on the rich. You can argue that new taxes aren't fair. You can argue that they affect investments in new businesses. But a mass exodus? So far, no one has proved it.

It turns out, according to the studies, people move for lots of other reasons—like jobs, or sun, or cheaper housing. Taxes don't appear to be much of a driver on their own.

And what about the argument that the measures are also driving away businesses? A study released this month says Oregon's actually among the most competitive states—No. 2—when it comes to corporate tax burdens.

Notes Scott Moore, spokesman for Our Oregon, the political outfit that pushed for the two tax measures: "That was the case before Measure 67, and it was the case after Measure 67."

The Planet Saturn Is a Jerk

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 2:14 PM

planets.jpg

Want to see some space stuff? Look up, dummy! Right now there are six planets visible in the dawn sky, according to a report on Space.com:
If you get up any morning for the next few weeks, you’ll be treated to the sight of all the planets except Saturn arrayed along the ecliptic, the path of the sun through the sky.

For the last two months, almost all the planets have been hiding behind the sun, but this week they all emerge and are arrayed in a grand line above the rising sun. Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter are visible, and you can add Uranus and Neptune to your count if you have binoculars or a small telescope.

So, uh... what the fuck, Saturn? Too good to join our little sky party? (You'll also notice Pluto's not invited because—well, we all know what Pluto did. Let us never speak of it again.)

Over the next couple mornings, take a look eastward. Venus will be the brightest, Jupiter the second brightest. To help you get oriented tomorrow morning, the moon will be right above Venus, and on Sunday it will be hovering above Jupiter and Mars. In related news, the old mnemonic to help you remember the order of the planets, My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas, has been permanently changed to My Very Elegant Mother Just Upchucked Noisily.

Suck it, Saturn.

Dear David Letterman: Never Wish Me Happy Birthday

On last night's show, David Letterman wished his arch-nemesis Jay Leno a happy (?) birthday. From The Hollywood Reporter:

“Happy Birthday to Jay Leno. 61 years old today,” he said on his late night CBS show. “Jay, of course, being one of the few tyrants still alive. All of his friends got together and had a cake. Jay cut the cake with the same knife he stuck in Conan’s back.”

Berbati's is Back

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 11:41 AM

bp.jpeg

Well, this is welcome news. Months after we said our weepy farewells and they shuttered their concert space for good, Berbati's (the venue) has returned. While the restaurant never went away, the former show room is back in action. The club is now a little smaller than in previous years (an expanded Voodoo Doughnuts is now located in the entrance and back area of the former club), and has received a remodeling facelift as well. Word has it there are plans to eventually change the club's named to Ted's (in honor of former owner Ted Papaioannou, who passed away last year).

The first show at the new Berbati's will be Beach Fossils on May 6. You can get your tickets here.

In other new/old downtown club news, Dante's has leased and refurbished the Star Theater (13 NW 6th). If you remember, the Star was shut down in 2009 but the classic building dates all the way back to 1911. Their first show will be This Will Destroy You on May 20.

End Hits: Your move, Paris Theatre.

Portland Farmers Market (Without Having To Park Near PSU)

Posted by Tony Perez on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 11:17 AM

Though the PSU Farmers Market has been up and running for awhile, the season is escalating with several more markets openings in the next week.

9637994511_ctrc7.jpg

The King Market (NE Wygant St & NE 7th Ave) opens this Sunday, 10-2, and will return every Sunday thereafter through October 30. According to the (bullshit) weather application on my phone, it's supposed to be 70 degrees on Sunday. Assuming my dreams of wearing a short-sleeved shirt outside aren't crushed yet again, I plan on stopping by before I commandeer my neighbors barbecue.

Shemanski Park (SW Park Ave & SW Salmon St) starts slinging produce Wednesday, 10-2, and runs each week through October 26th.

Buckman (SE Salmon St & SE 20th Ave) opens Thursday, 3-7, and operates through September.

You can check out a complete list of participating vendors here.

• Inspired by the Thor movie, this amazing Thor Electronic Hammer will give you the powers of Thor! (Or a reasonable plastic facsimile thereof.)

Denis Says "Sayonara" to Jeopardy!

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 10:44 AM

As briefly mentioned in Good Morning, News! (which Sarah forgot to do, and I'm still pissed about it), our resident brainiac Denis Theriault was unseated last night from his throne as reigning champion of Jeopardy! I am nevertheless extremely proud of his performance, because he was faced with two ball-busting boards, and a VERY cute competitor. (The girl on the end, not the weird old guy that looked like Creed from The Office.)

HOWEVER! As brilliant as Denis was (especially when he pulled that Double Jeopardy answer out of his ass during round two), there was his very controversial (AND DEAD WRONG) answer in Final Jeopardy. The topic was: "The first president to put solar panels on the White House." And while the other two contestants correctly guessed "Who is Jimmy Carter?" Denis decided his best answer was "Who is George W. Bush?"

Ummm… HUH? This answer obviously needed some 'splainin', which Denis was happy to provide.

Unlike most Americans, who blurted out the answer immediately, I didn't know it. Ask me which presidents were elected to second terms but failed to complete them, and I'm there. (Incidentally, the night after my taping, that was the Final Jeopardy clue. I got it; the three contestants did not. Sigh.) And when it came to a guess, I froze up. Instead of puzzling through to the logical answer—Jimmy Motherfucking Carter—I overthought things and went with the "counterintuitive" choice, deciding this was a "trick" question. Again, if I'd taken a second to ponder things like, oh, oil shocks, and lowered thermostats, and a national urging to put on sweaters, I'd have won a shit-ton more money. I'd be getting drunk in front of the TV tonight.

It's okay, Denis! I guessed Millard Fillmore.
ANYWAY, NICE WORK, DENIS! We're all giddily proud, and besides, as you say in your very entertaining feature this week, "Every Jeopardy! winner is eventually a Jeopardy! loser. (Though you'll always be a Mercury winner to us. All together now... AWWWWWWWW!!!!)

SL Letter of the Day: Informed, Right? RIGHT?

Posted by Dan Savage on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 10:28 AM

I am a weekly reader and first time writer. I have been taking Acyclovir daily to treat herpes for a number of years and in that time have rarely had an outbreak. Recently the wife part of a cuckhold couple accused me of passing along the virus to her. We always used protection but she always also demanded receiving extensive oral first. Although there was no visible manifestation of the virus anywhere on my body, was it possible for me to infect her with my saliva by licking or kissing her along any of the access points? Would it even be possible for me to pass along the virus through precum when receiving oral?

I apologized profusely at the time and have not spoken with her again but it always seemed like someone else, other guys or the hubby, could have also been the culprit.

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 9:59 AM

The Q Center's weekly movie night is screening October Country tonight (7 pm, sliding scale donation), which I highly recommend checking out. It was made by two Portland filmmakers, Donal Mosher and Michael Palmieri, which has nothing to do with the fact that it is probably among my top 10 favorite docs of all time. It's a case study of Mosher's extended family, who have more than their fair share of challenges, and the trust between the filmmakers and subjects results in an especially intimate portrait of life in everyday America. or as I put it in this week's Film Shorts, it's "about a typically atypical family wracked by everything from the Vietnam War to child abuse, teen pregnancy, poverty, and Wiccaphobia." You can also read a Q&A I did with the filmmakers last year here.

Blazers vs. Mavericks - Hot Live (Playoff) Blog Action

Posted by Ezra Ace Caraeff on Thu, Apr 28, 2011 at 7:31 PM

BLZRSDALLAS.jpeg

Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers take on the Dallas Mavericks in what could very well be the final game of the season for the home team. The Mavs have pushed the Blazers to the very brink of elimination and Portland now needs a win tonight to prolong this series, and a win in Dallas on Sunday to advance to the next round.

If that doesn't happen, season over. The fans go home, the Blazers hit the golf course, and the Rose Garden goes dark... until May 19 when Jeff Dunham comes to town. Oh, for the love god. Hey Blazers, you want some motivation? That's it. The more you win, the less likely that hack of a ventriloquist will take over your arena. This isn't about basketball, or winning, it's about our shared hatred for puppets.

In or Out on JTTF? Well, We're More In Than We Were

Posted by Denis C. Theriault on Thu, Apr 28, 2011 at 6:03 PM

DSCN4018.jpg
At a long-awaited hearing pierced, at times, by the cries of a passionate protest outside city hall, a unanimous Portland City Council voted this afternoon to upend six years of city policy and sign onto a rare agreement with the federal government that reunites its police officers with a controversial anti-terrorism task force while also paying respects to Oregon's unique civil liberties laws.

In a sight that might have seemed impossible only a week ago, U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton and the ACLU's Andrea Meyer both sat at the same table in front of the council, offering their support for the city's resolution on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. That was made possible after a deal worked out by Commissioner Randy Leonard this week, refining a previous attempt by Mayor Sam Adams last week that sought to achieve the same goal—but with language that Holton found objectionable.

Even as the hearing opened, several important questions loomed over the resolution. And it wasn't certain earlier this week, given those questions, that the council would actually decide on the pact. But the vote came, after commissioners asked a series of tough questions. In another surprise,i t was unanimous. Nick Fish, Adams, and Leonard were known to be in support, but Dan Saltzman, who first pushed for full rejoining last fall, and Amanda Fritz, were on the fence. How they came to agree was funny.

"This agreement is leaps and bounds from where we started," Saltzman said in remarks light on praise for the mayor, saying he considers it "rejoining." "And it's light years ahead of where we left off in what i considered to be a disappointing 2005 agreement. It gets us working together."

Then quoth Fritz: "The FBI is already operating in Portland. I want our police officers to know what's going on. We're not rejoining the JTTF, and I think that's a good thing."
