Death Rides a Horse, or Lee Van Cleef Is a Badass

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 2:25 PM

We ran a rundown of the three films showing at the Hollywood as part of their Italian Western series, but tonight's your last chance to catch the series' first film, Death Rides a Horse, on the big screen. It stars Lee Van Cleef, who is immensely cool, and Ken the Doll John Phillip Law, who is immensely not. Doesn't matter. Van Cleef is enough of a badass to carry the film.

In the paper, I wrote that Death Rides a Horse is "essentially the same movie as [Sergio] Leone's For a Few Dollars More," but that's not entirely fair. Horse has plenty going for it, including some great photography, flashbacks drenched in blood red, terrific gunplay, and the amazing score by Ennio Morricone. But the best thing about it is Van Cleef—who you should remember from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Escape from New York—right down to his mustache and growling voice.

Trailer after the jump.

Death Rides a Horse, tonight, Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy, 7:20 pm, $7

I'll take Sam Peckinpahs Wild Bunch over all of those Italian Westerns any day. Or Ride the High Country... etc etc.

That looks like the worst spa treatment I've ever seen.
