Following Tuesday's unexpected-but-inevitable news that DC Comics is rebooting everything and going day-and-date with digital releases*, ComicsAlliance has been killing it: First there was David Uzumeri's smart piece on the news, "DC Comics Number One Stunna: The Ballsiest Move of the Decade," and now Laura Hudson's scored some reactions from comics retailers.

Those reactions are, shall we say, varied: "It's not the end of the world. It's just what's next," says Portlyn Freeman of Brave New World Comics in Newhall, California, regarding digital distribution, while Adam Healy of Portland's own Cosmic Monkey Comics has some harsh words about the reboot:

I don't see any evidence that this is anything but a disastrously desperate attempt to reacquire relevance in today's pop cultural milieu. In the process, DC risks destroying all that is attractive about their product.

Reaction to the news has been universally negative in our store so far. After investing a great deal of time, energy and money in the Batman and Green Lantern lines, many fans feel betrayed that all that work is tossed out to make way for "New Coke." The compelling nature of these characters combined with 70-plus years of wonderful and ridiculous storytelling by a variety of eccentrics is what gives them the gravitas to be taken seriously by millions... DC has seriously miscalculated what the market needs and what readers want.

Both of those ComicsAlliance pieces are worth reading for anyone who cares about comics, publishing, digital distribution, and/or whether all of this hubbub means we'll finally get an Egghead/Egg Fu team-up series.**

*At least for their superhero books, anyway—unless I've missed it somewhere, I don't think it's been made clear if DC's Vertigo imprint will be affected. I've got an email in to DC asking just that; I'll update here once I hear back.

**This series should probably be titled Hard Boiled 2.
