The Nordic Fashion Biennale

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 12:29 PM

In 2009 the first-ever Nordic Fashion Biennale went down in Rejvjavík, and this fall it's being held for the first time in the US. It's being hosted by Seattle's Nordic Heritage Museum from September 30-November 13, with an accompanying two-day symposium on September 30 and October 1. According to the web site, "The symposium will include prominent speakers and inspiring presentations on themes like sustainability and fashion, slow-fashion and cultural heritage," and the roster of speakers includes, rather thrillingly, Danish designer Henrik Vibskov. What does this mean to you other than a potential road trip? Well, the Symposium is also hosting the NxNW Fashion Competition, in which design students, recent graduates, and emerging designers with no more than two years' experience post-graduation can register to compete, creating an original garment or accessory inspired by Nordic design, to be judged by a trio of style industry reps, including Diane Von Furstenberg Creative Director Yvan Mispelaere. Anyone on the West Coast is eligible, but act fast—the deadline is coming right the hell up, on August 1st. (Registration info is here.) Here's your reward for hustling: "Two winners will receive round-trip airfare from Seattle to Reykjavik, Iceland, three nights’ accommodations, and tickets to a special fashion event during Reykjavik Fashion Week 2012."

MOD: We may not come from the land of the ice and snow, but we'd like to be able to dress for it.
