It's that time again, and as our current Editorial Intern Cecilia readies herself to return to school, we're on the hunt for a fall replacement. The Editorial Intern works with all editors in the editorial department, and is a good position for candidates with a general interest in learning the ropes of local arts coverage and criticism, from film to art and design, to books, to nude nerd bingo nights (18 and over a plus). The ideal candidate will possess a deep love for the Mercury (or at least enough of a familiarity with our style that you can parody it without us catching on to the mimicry); an active interest in the local scene (if you're new to town or you've had your nose in schoolbooks for a while this is a great way to discover Portland); and the self-starting motivation to be an active part of an innovative media company that dares to thrive in the face of industry "death" (ha!).
You'll have the opportunity to accrue published clips and gain the experiences you'll need to get your foot in the door of the modern media world. In exchange, we'll ask that you attend our weekly editorial meetings, do some light data entry and transcriptions, and come up with some ideas and pitches of your own in addition to our (admittedly sometimes bizarre) assignments. Things like corn suits and alcohol-related dares sometimes come up, just sayin'!
We need someone who can start in the next few weeks, and you can expect the internship to run for about three months—more or less depending on how it's workin' out. The hours are pretty flexible but you'll need to be available on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings for sure. Most interns come in two or three days a week, and we'll work with you on a schedule that suits. If you (or someone you know) think you might be a good fit at the Merc, please email me a resume, some writing examples (unpublished is totally okay, term papers not so much), and a brief explanation of why you'd like to be the bestest intern we ever did have. We look very much forward to meeting you.
