Microsoft Unveils Windows 8: What Do You Think?

So Microsoft showed off Windows 8 for the first time today. It's supposed to be one unifying OS for phones, tablets, and desktops. This Is My Next has the best explanation of how it works, but Gizmodo's description is pretty good, and they posted a nice video of what it's like to flip through a Windows 8 tablet, too. (Find the official Microsoft page for Windows 8 right here.) Reviews so far say that the Metro UI—the tile-based touchscreen interface you see on Windows phones—is pretty slick, although you do have to swap back and forth between Metro and regular desktop interfaces if you want to manage a broad array of tasks.

What do you think?

Why is there no 'meh' option in that poll?

Because, as a vegan, I...

The new "ribbon" needs like 200 more options. It's not busy enough.

By the time they get this out, better companies will have made something more interesting. This looks like garbage.

That said, I'd definitely prefer to use this than the WinXP I'm still using @ work.

I would like a 'don't care' choice for the poll. All of these options are contingent on me actually caring or clicking links, both of which I cannot/refuse to do.

For a PC user like me, it doesn't seem like it's going to be an upgrade. Different UI and whatnot but I'll probably stick with W7.

Microsoft couldn't hire a decent UI designer if the company's very existence depended on it.

Every time I see the Win7 Phone main screen I wonder how the hell they think people actually find it appealing.

I am one of those crazy people that you refer to who finds my AT&T WP7 Focus "appealing". Actually apealing understates it. It's the best mobile device I've ever owned. 2 of my favorite recent features are the comments I get while using my device standing next to an iPhone user: 1) "Wow that's fast" and 2) You've got signal here?

That said, I think the W8 Metro UI will quite nice on a tablet. I'll stick with the traditioanl UI for my deskop/laptop: also a feature in W8. Nice job Microsoft.
