The Blogtown Grammartician: What's an Abbreviation for "Usual"?

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 10:44 AM

Though I am loathe to admit it, the Mercury has hired someone who has little to no regard for the English language. (And no, I'm not talking about the entire staff.) I'm talking about sales account executive Marissa who said, and I quote, "I luv 2 abbrev e-thing!" (Translated: I love to abbreviate everything.) That's fine with me—I avoid communicating with her at all costs. HOWEVER! She did bring up an interesting quandary: How does one abbreviate the word "usual"? Stumped for an answer (and not caring to think about it any further), I'm punting this to the internet/abbreviation savvy residents of Blogtown. So what is it, you guys?

HOW WOULD YOU ABBREVIATE THE WORD, "USUAL"?

Usual is boring. I'd say "on the reg." It is longer than writing usual, but much, much cooler.

Just avoid using that word. There is no quality abbreviation.

You just say the first syllable "us-." Pronounced "Yoozsh." In writing, you don't abbreviate it because it's only 5 letters long. Tell Marissa that she is lazy.

@blabby I'm well aware of my laziness...I've been deal with it my whole life. Here's where it all started: http://portlandspretty.wordpress.com/2011/…

One does not abbreviate the word "usual". There's probably a rule against abbreviating words that are only five letters long anyway.

You're the editor here, you ought to know.

You used "obsessh" as an abbreviation for "obsession"? No, Marissa!

Use an ñ (Alt-164). It's an upside-down u with a tiny s on top. Yes, it's just as much work as typing "usual," but SO worth it.

Steven, why did you put a comma before "usual?" I've noticed your using unnecessary commas before, and it bugs the bajeezus outta me. QUIT, you! Also, todd mecklam, your comments are always everything to me.

Thanks, cheetoface. But give Steve a break, he's suffering from post-Sam-Elliott depression or some such. BTW, Steve, I think you meant "loath," not "loathe." Jesus Fucking Christ.
