In the wee hours of the morning, a car drove down the stairs near the Salmon St. fountain and through the blue railing separating the waterfront path from the Willamette River (as reported in Good Morning News!). The woman driving — the only occupant in the car — died after breaking off the railing and hitting the water below.
According to the Portland Police Bureau's press release, the investigation is underway and all other information on the incident is on hold until the woman's family is contacted.
An onlooker said that the car was pulled out of the river by a tow truck this morning.
