Max Brumm Mad About Being Left Out of Mayoral Fundraiser

Rooting for Mr. Brumm? Bud Clark!
  • Rooting for Mr. Brumm? Bud Clark!

UPDATE: The organizers of this fundraiser, VOIS, emailed to say that the headline of this post implies that this was a fundraiser FOR mayoral candidates. They're right, it's confusing. This is a fundraiser for VOIS, involving mayoral candidates. Just a clarification.

Remember that time I completely forgot about the 19-year-old kid who is running for mayor against Eileen Brady, Charlie Hales, and now Jefferson Smith?

Well, lil' Max Brumm was left out of something once again, only this time it's not an article, it's a fundraiser with Portland's sustainability bigwigs.

Brumm forwarded over this entire email exchange (PDF) with the organizer of a private fundraiser for the mayoral candidates hosted by the Voice of Oregon Innovation and Sustainability's Business Alliance. It includes messages from none other than Bud Clark and Max's mom weighing in on why Brumm should be invited to the fundraiser as a "viable" candidate despite not having the "demonstrated track record of supporting sustainability and business in Portland."

It's a pretty funny back-and-forth. Basically: Are groups that host mayoral events obligated to invite everyone's who's running, even if they think they have no chance of winning or influencing the outcome?

hey sarah, kind of a dick move to publish someones gmail address on the mercury website. Given the address that is clearly THE Sattie Clark of the awesome band 17 reasons why, and I am betting that she doesn't really want that gmail address spread all over the place. Maybe you should make an edit to the .pdf before publishing it out. Max's mom is kind of a douche for not doing it herself. Also if he wants to seem viable and not like a little kid then maybe having his mom run his campaign is his first mistake.

JESUS SHIT-TITS CHRIST. THIS MAX-KID HAS TWO MAJOR TYPOS IN THE HEADLINE FOR HIS ANNOUNCEMENT THAT HE'S RUNNING: http://www.max4mayor.com/2011/09/if-your-n…

THAT IS 100% OF THE REASON TO NOT INVITE HIM TO THIS HIPPY ASS FORUM.

I hear his main issue is that schools are failing our children.

Bud and Mom need to find hobbies. Why don't we get little Max some stanky on his hang-down first, then he can move on to bigger things like running a mid-major city.

so Jake Oken-Berg got taken seriously but Max isn't? i've met him, he's come to a few community events i've been at, and he's more serious than a lot of people who run.

a good reason to include him is that those at this event can meet him & decide for themselves, not if he's "viable" but if he's the kind of person who'll be helping Portland's future. they may even want to contribute to his campaign to encourage him & others to step up. he's running a decent campaign, given he doesn't have $150K & the rest of the connections.

give him some respect. he's earning it.

He is 19, doesn't interview well, and wears an ironic American flag leather coat. His parents ought to be ashamed of themselves for encouraging this sort of empty resume-building. Max is just a kid, but the adults who support him are cynical assholes who certainly know that it's only ok to do so because he doesn't have a chance in hell. They would shit like the rest of us if he actually got elected. Stop being dicks.

If I'm having a party to, I dunno, celebrate local musicians, I'm not going to invite the fucking kid that just bought himself a banjo and put some shit up on MySpace.

It just doesn't fit the spirit of the event, no matter how earnest he is.

"If your [sic] not first, your [sic] last." Max and Mom, you just made my point, and my day.

@ta

I don't think Jake Oken-Berg was taken that seriously. He got a lot of votes from people that hated Vera Katz and a lot from people who knew Vera Katz was going to be reelected in a landslide no matter who they voted for. Still you're right he should probably be given a chance just like the other candidates...even if his mom is running his campaign.

This is Portland people!! Known across the country for being weird, funky and one of a kind for our unique ability to embrace differences in our culture and political views. Bud Clark and his raincoat! Kitzhaber and his jeans and cowboy boots! The list could go on but I think you catch my drift. Max has good ideas and intentions centered around some of Portland's key issues. Our current mayor has so many shortfalls virtually anyone could perform a better job at the helm. I will remain in the corner of change and Portland's unique desire to embrace it!
