Portland Fashion Week, Day 3: Ms. Wood, Seth Aaron, and Amai Unmei's Big Red Dress

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Sat, Oct 8, 2011 at 3:14 PM

There really was no contest in the conversation-starting department between the conventional occasion dresses of Stephanie D. Couture, and the elbow-patched literary collegiate menswear of Collier versus the clamour to see Ms. Wood's new accessories and the Seth Aaron hype machine last night. One exception: This red dress from Amai Unmei.

Diversifying beyond kimono sleeves, Ms. Wood turned out a number of simple silhouettes, plus a disco-y fringe white mini dress that evolved from last season's black fringe skirts. Fringe taking its place in the Ms. Wood-repertoire, showing up on at least one version among a slightly heart-stopping array of variations on the notorious Ms. Wood platforms, including a lower-heeled option. (The originals, redone in white and dove gray, coiled themselves a little deeper into my heart.) The bags were also not neglected, reaching a zenith, in my opinion, with a large white shopper with quilted detail.

Headliner Seth Aaron seems to have a thing for covering up models' faces, and this time he hid them behind creepy plastic masks that looked like under made-up clown faces. He rolled out a sporty new logo, printing it on some of the surprisingly straightforward silhouettes he sent down the runway in Earthtec's rather genius recycled-bottle fabric. Seth Aaron likes his flash and drama (there were horror-show faces splashed on separates and coats), but there was really only one piece I felt represented the full extent of his technical skills. I would wear this in a heartbeat:

And this would really knock 'em dead at your next vampire-themed cocktail party (that's a good thing):
