Ethics Small Anti-Racism Campaign Goes Big

Perhaps in response to this post, a Ohio University group, Students Teaching Against Racism, launched a Halloween anti-racism campaign this week.

These posters have spread like wildfire across the interwebs. And it looks like STAR wasn't predicting such a spotlight. STAR released a statement on its president's Tumblr account:
We are so proud of all the support but it’s overwhelming; We have less than 10 members in our group. lol We ask that you do not personally email any of the execs or message their personal tumblrs. Thank you guys so much for the love! The purpose was to educate and create dialogue and it did :) We have a meeting with a lawyer on Monday so we can protect our posters and the posters will be all over Ohio University’s campus this week! Again, thanks for the support and have a happy Halloween!

I don't see anything wrong with the Geisha costume, no different then dressing up like a clown or a mine.

RE: the ad on the top left
As a vampire-American, I find it offensive that we are all portrayed as pale, white people. From Blacula to The Count, vampires come in all colors. This is NOT ok.

I like how their first response was to lawyer up and get some IP in place to "protect" their posters. As opposed to, you know, letting people use them to fight racism....

There's kind of a fine line with the geisha costume. The photo that's being used in the abovepictured ad is on the wrong side of that line. The hair is large and cartoonish, the woman's hand gestures and posture are exaggerated and a parody of actual Japanese composure, and it contains basically nothing in the way of authenticity. It's racist crap.
However, if a non-Japanese person were to research the hell out of period fashion and make themselves a respectful geisha costume that actually looked like something a real Edo-era entertainer would wear, that's a different story entirely. That would be fine.
Being enthusiastic about things Japanese and translating that genuine enthusiasm into a costume is great. Last year a friend of mine actually pulled of an amazing geisha costume, and there was nothing racist about it. Instead, there was immense admiration for traditional Edo costumery and fashion. Strutting around like you're a member of a low-budget production of The Mikaido, though, isn't cool.
