Friday: Ground Kontrol's "Halloween Extravaganza"

Posted by Earnest "Nex" Cavalli on Wed, Oct 26, 2011 at 3:22 PM

What better way to celebrate Halloween than as the ancient pagan tribes did? With alcohol, nachos and Virtua Cop 2!

This Friday, Ground Kontrol, Portland's favorite purveyor of all things intoxicant and nostalgically pixelated, is hosting "Giga-Fright." As usual the full press release is beyond the jump, but in short Giga-Fright is a Halloween party with decidedly geeky, gaming-themed events, food and prizes. Pertinent excerpt from the press release:

Sponsored by Floating World Comics, Voodoo Doughnuts, and Critical Hit Burlesque, expect a night of gruesome gaming, a killer costume contest, Halloween High-Scores, and your chance to spin Ground Kontrol’s Hall-O-Wheel for big prizes and a random Halloween themed video game challenge! Giga-Fright will be held from 7:00pm to 1:00am at Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade, featuring a devilishly delicious food and drink menu and a multitude of manic prizes, all set to a freaky fun soundtrack from guest DJs Willy Joy (Kid Sister/Trouble & Bass), Epor, and Capcom D!

In addition, Ground Kontrol will be accepting entries for its first ever Console Costume Contest through the night of Giga-Fright. Dress up your favorite console in its Halloween finest and you could walk away with the grand prize! All entries will be photographed for Ground Kontrol’s Facebook page, and may even be on display through the Halloween season! Stay tuned for more announcements and surprises at Ground Kontrol’s website: http://groundkontrol.com or Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/GroundKontrol

Now, all of this is pretty de rigueur Halloween celebration-type stuff, but then we get to the part about the "Console Costume Contest." I had to read that twice to figure it out, but apparently the idea is that entrants decorate classic gaming consoles in an effort to impress the judges.

As far as I can tell, there are no thematic requirements, so whatever sort of aesthetic design concept you have in mind will work, assuming it can be applied to an old-school gaming machine. I've got a plan in mind that I would share with you guys, but I don't want any of you stealing it. Hint: It involves an Eggplant Wizard, the 1989 Patrick Swayze vehicle Road House, and the storied sociopolitical strife of apartheid-era Johannesburg.

It's gonna be stupid-awesome!

Like I said, the press release:
