The Northwest Filmmakers' Festival Starts Today!

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Fri, Nov 11, 2011 at 12:29 PM

I'm not just being a homer when I say I'm especially proud of the films being shown at this year's Northwest Filmmakers' Festival. It's a compendium of the best films from the Pacific Northwest over the last year, but frankly this year it's dominated by Portland productions, and there are a lot of really, really good ones—check out my piece in this week's film section for my picks (including a couple that we didn't have the room to run in the print edition).

Tonight things are kicking off with a big party at the Portland Art Museum, not only celebrating the launch of the fest but also the NW Film Center's 40th season of programming—there will be a shitload of birthday cakes from local bakeries in addition to a no-host bar and music by Brainstorm and Dirty Mittens. The first program of shorts screens next door at the Whitsell Auditorium at 7, party time is 9. The festival itself runs through the 20th, including extraneous events and panels that aspiring filmmakers would do well to investigate—complete schedule is here. In the meantime, peep the trailer for the fest by Mutt Industries, which takes literally the concept of a film being someone's "baby" and sends up us critics pretty fairly.
