Election 2012 Get Ready for the Main Event: Supreme Court to Rule on Health Care Reform

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to decide the fate of President Barack Obama's healthcare law, with an election-year ruling due by July on the healthcare system's biggest overhaul in nearly 50 years.
It's hard to tell if this is good news or bad news for President Obama. On the one hand, it will keep his health care reform bill directly in Republican crosshairs for almost a full year. On the other hand, we'll have a solid ruling on the reform's Constitutionality well in advance of next year's elections.
If the Court rules that the individual mandate is acceptable, whoever the Republicans choose for a nominee—let's just call him "Mitt"—will have a hard time arguing about the Supreme Court being filled with activist judges. It could be good news for Mitt if the Court rules against the individual mandate; that could be a stamp of approval on Mitt's claims that President Obama is reckless and anti-Constitution. All of this means that the Supreme Court could have a direct hand in electing the next President of the United States. That worked out so well for all of us the last time that happened.
