NO SONIC YOUTH NOOOO!

Did you hear about the new Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon split? 27 years in the making...
  • Did you hear about the new Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon split? 27 years in the making...

Rumor has it that the clip below might be from Sonic Youth's last concert ever. After Kim and Thurston announced their divorce last month, their publicist confirmed that the future of the band was "uncertain" after fulfilling their touring obligations. And yeah, their show last night in Sao Paolo was their last scheduled gig (tip: fast-forward to 11:00 for a disturbing rendition of "Sacred Trickster"). I'm pretty sure that no one in the band even makes eye contact with each other during the whole show. It's not looking good. This is so, so fucked. Nothing is sacred. I want to die.

SY has been together literally my entire lifespan. Let them go.

Whoa, that'd be like Georgia and Ira breaking up Yo La Tengo.

Except they're a good band.

uhmmm, this news of breaking up (the band) its like coming out of those "Fantastic Newspapers" that are in the stands featuring alien/demon boy born in xxxx or whatever. Gotta give them the respect of choice and privacy.

I wish they could have disintegrated better, though it’s not like I’ve listened to one of their albums in the last decade.

I've seen them about 10 times over the years and the last time I saw them was at Matador 21 this past October. That was by far the best show I'd ever seen them perform.

First R.E.M. and now Sonic Youth. Can it be that the 1980's are actually coming to an end?

And if so, please can we please get rid of Reagonomics, too please?

That's ok, they're probably tired after writing that same song over and over again for 27 years.

Screw this, last time I saw them was when they played after Iggy Pop in the Line Up of the Evening. I have to see them again even if it means grabbing a Grayhound to Sweden.

On a stage that large, much like Reading in the UK, you don't have the same kind of intimacy you would have at the Roseland for example. They were in good form as far as I can tell given their ability to transfer that kind of noise at an amphitheater like that. As long as Free Kitten makes another album and Thurston plus Renaldo keeps up their solo bit, I can put SY in the past as weird as it is for me to type this.
