The Most Torrented Movies of 2011

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Tue, Jan 3, 2012 at 1:59 PM

One thing Ebert didn't mention in his list of reasons why movie revenues are down: People don't like paying for things anymore. Speaking of: TorrentFreak has a list of the top 10 torrented films of 2011, and I can't decide if torrenters have okay or terrible taste in movies.

Huh. Sucker Punch is on that list, so I'm just going to go with "terrible." Via Dark Horizons.

I ONLY TORRENTED ONE OF THOSE MOVIES. THE INTERESTING THING TO NOTE IS THAT THREE OF THESE MOVIES WERE IN THE TOP TEN HIGHEST GROSSING FILMS OF THE YEAR. I SORT OF EXPECTED THERE TO BE MORE SIGNIFIGANT OVERLAP BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS.

It's not that people don't like paying for things, it's that people don't like being overcharged for shitty things.

No, it's that people don't like paying for things, even non-shitty things. Anyone who has tried to pass a tax increase in the last 20 years would tell you the same.

Totalitariland starts off 2012 with a doozy of a candidate for first COTW of the year.

I downloaded Thor, and meant to download The King's Speech, but ended up jerking off instead. My masturbation session had a better ending than King's Speech, which I ended up streaming.

@3, it's not that I won't pay for films. My 32" monitor and shitty speakers playing an R5 rip won't be the same experience as a HD film in 3D with a $15k sound system. The theater is for seeing proper films, not rewashed hollywood bullshit. That's why all of these films ended up being downloaded and not purchased, they blew monkey balls.

But those movies still provided you some entertainment. Shitty or not, you should pay for that.

Chuck, but that's just it. I SHOULD wash my jeans after a few wears. I SHOULD change my oil every few thousand miles. American consumers aren't great with "should."

But I absolutely agree with axiom. I'll definitely pay to see movies in theaters when that would enhance the viewing experience. But expecting me to fork over $12 because the 20th-Century-stuck asshats at Paramount wasted $80 million making some piece of shit is just insane.

Should we also pay more when a chef wastes three plates of food to get the order right? Should we pay more for hair dying because the stylist takes three tries to get the right shade?

It's basic consumer competence and the chronic underestimation of it by the entertainment industry. They could have prevented this, but they decided to fight tooth-and-nail to deny the future had arrived. Now they're fucked, and I won't shed a tear.
