BagelWatch 2012: Kettleman's Update

Posted by Alison Hallett on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 10:44 AM

According to the Portland Business Journal,

The Einstein Noah Restaurant Group on Monday said it will offer several kettle-style boiled bagel varieties at its Portland-area Einstein Bros. Bagels stores following its acquisition of Portland-based Kettleman Bagel Co.

The Denver-based restaurant chain in November announced that it had acquired the smaller, Portland upstart. In a news release Monday, the company said it would rebrand the five Kettleman locations as Einstein stores over the next five months

But as part of the transition, it is inviting Portland consumers to visit the company's Facebook page — Facebook.com/einsteinbros — through Feb. 13 to vote on their favorite flavor of boiled bagel. The company will announce the top flavors on Feb. 13, three of which will be added to the menu of Einstein's Portland locations.

But click on over to their Facebook page to find the survey, and it's completely buried in posts like this one:

I like good bagels too, but the foodie anguish on display in the comments over there is a tiny bit hilarious.

The man is ruining my bagels, man.

I just hope New Seasons can get a new bagel provider with tasty bagels.

So the stores that are now Kettelman's will be Einstein Bros and will only have 5 varieties of boiled bagels? The rest will be trucked/frozen?

Embarrassingly, my bagel of choice comes from My Favorite Muffin in Beaverton. 'Burb life!

boiled bagels is a redundant phrase, einsteins needs to step up with some truth in advertising on their wide selection of "rolls with holes".

Also for anyone who actually likes a good bagel head on over to Bagelland on Fremont, they have reopened following the fire at the clothing store next door.

I DON'T GIVE ONE SHIT ABOUT BAGELS. LETS TALK ABOUT BIGNETS OR DONUTS INSTEAD, NOT SOME ZIONIST BREAD CONSPIRACY.

Self-identified "foodies" are the same jerks from the burbs standing in line at Voodoo. Fuck 'em.

I hate bagels!

Just kidding, I love bagels. Bagels by the Sea make the best bagels in the state.

I can't believe people can get that worked up over bagels.

@6....true, but there are a lot of idiots from Portland proper standing in line at Voodoo. Does that make them better? Im with most of you, don't mess with a good product. Oh, and given some of the stupid shit some of you and this publication gets worked up about (Red Dawn? seriously? Portlandia?) I don't finding wanting good bagels so absurd.

It's not just about the bagels. For me, it's more about the fact that this corporation will do nothing for our community. No more local suppliers like Stumptown, no more wholesale to places like New Seasons or Whole Foods. And of course, no more delicious bagels. Go look at Einstein's FB photos of the garbage these people try to pass off as a bagel.

What Mmmmmbagels said. I actually think it's quite cool that people are hijacking Einstein's FB page to vent. If ya don't like it, well, nobody's holding a gun to your head forcing you to read it...

My ass and blood sugar levels owe the Einstein's corporation a debt of gratitude for getting rid of Kettleman's, but my taste buds want to send Luca Brasi after them.
