Crafty Surfboard Building Class? Okay!

I have a sneaking suspicion this may be of interest to more than a few of you crafty people out there. Grain Surfboard Co. out of York, Maine is coming to Portland to give a wooden surfboard building class from March 4 through 10th. And each board will be made from "locally salvaged redwood" milled right here in Oregon. More info:

Each students attends the class for 7 days, builds their board from scratch with help from our two instructors, and goes home with a finished board ready to glass. All materials, instruction and 2 practically gourmet meals are included in the price.

Classes are filling up fast, and apparently only a couple spots are left, so if you're interested in building your own board, find out more info here! While not exactly cheap, this class sounds fun, and not only will you learn a poop-ton, the board you'll go home with is gorgeous.

Cool idea. If you are lucky enough to get in please surf with it instead of making it an "art piece". If I hear one more person say " I have to go do my art....." I will hurl. Why do you have to announce it? That's like tools that say "I have to go to band practice" really loudly. I get it: you're in a band. You're an "artist" . You are so" Portland". Actually you are pathetically begging for attention. Lame. Anyway, rant over, and btw there are pretty good waves here

Unless you are a very experienced surfer, please do NOT surf on a redwood board. Unless the boards have hollowed-out chambers within them, they will weigh around 100 pounds. If you're a newb and want to build your own board and learn to surf on it, redwood isn't the way to go. You'll fall, the board will hit you, and you'll be bruised or broken. And when you do manage to stand up and ride a wave, you'll be riding on a 100 pound board, and will not have a lot of control.

This class sounds cool, though - definitely. I'd love to make one, and put it on my wall.

And I agree with The Shitsayer about commenter #1.

Thanks for the tips, ROM - I hadn't thought of the weight. I'll pass on trying to get into the class!

PCC sometimes offers a "build your own guitar" class...maybe I'll try that instead.

Showstopper, please stop posting so much. You are ruining Blogtown for me. I used to think the worst possible commentators were Damosa, frankieb, Andy from Beaverton and Todd Mecklem but once in a great while those guys will write something interesting or funny.
