Alberta's New Sugar Spot

Posted by Clare Gordon on Fri, Mar 9, 2012 at 10:14 AM

It took Eater PDX to tip me off that a new candy store had opened up in my very own neighborhood. Naturally, I rushed to the scene of the sugar spinning to find Candy Babel sitting pretty on Alberta St. between 12th and 13th. The shop is brightly lit with natural sunlight on days like yesterday and today, threatening to melt the Missionary Chocolates that hang out in their jewelry counter of a candy case.

Billing themselves as an international candy shop, Babel sports around 40 different bulk jars of candy at $10/lb, and encourages sampling of foreign treats. Liquorice lovers and Haribo fans have plenty to choose from, and even the vegan/gluten-intolerant/just plain picky can easily navigate their options with helpful labels posted on relevant jars. Cotton candy, which the owner started selling at Last Thursday long before opening the shop, is made in-house (in flavors like coconut or watermelon) and sold in little bags for 2 bucks a pop. Vintage tins fill the corner and are also for sale - they would make good gifts for any fan of cute old things, filled with candy or not. Head on over to find your favorite childhood confection or a brand new favorite! You won't be sorry. CANDY!
