Skate-A-Roke: What's Your Jam?

Skate-a-Roke: the perfect marriage of karaoke and roller skating! And it's going down once again THIS MONDAY (7-10 pm) at Oaks Park Roller Rink! PICTURE IT: You dressed in your sexiest skate gear and singing your lungs out on the rink floor as hundreds of similarly-dressed sexpots jam past you.

BUT WHAT SONG SHOULD YOU CHOOSE? AND SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO SKATE AND SING AT THE SAME TIME?

Let's take the second question first. If you are the type of skater who can jam forwards and backwards and circle the rink without busting a sweat or your ass—AND you have a good command of the lyrics? Why not. Give it a shot. At the first Skate-a-Roke, one of the Oaks Park employees skated backwards singing a dead-on version of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" and it was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever witnessed. As for me singing and skating? NO FUCKING WAY. I can barely stand still and sing without falling over.

So what song should you sing? First of all, think of something UPBEAT. This is a roller boogie jam, not a goddamn funeral. Leave your mopey ballads at home in the shower. Michael Jackson is great, early hiphop is great, '80s new wave is great—anything that moves! If you have a song in mind, check the Baby Ketten Karaoke site to see if they have your jam! AND GET YOUR TICKETS HERE AND NOW, they're only 10 bucks and you can beat the entry lines and get to the front of the karaoke queue pronto. REMEMBER: Partial proceeds of Skate-a-Roke go to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon who fight to keep our state the way it should be: PRO-CHOICE. Help 'em out, and have a great time doing it!

Oh, and here's a great song that would be a perfect jam for Skate-a-Roke. Enjoy, and I'll see YOU on Monday night!
