MSNBC reports on the latest celebroversy in the 2012 campaign:

“I do want to say one thing on behalf of both my wife, and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney and that is I think Robert De Niro is wrong,” Gingrich said as he began his speech at Strawn's Eat Shop Too. “I think the country is ready for a new first lady and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”

At an Obama for American fundraiser in New York City Monday night, attended by Michele Obama, De Niro joked about a possible GOP first lady.

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" De Niro asked at the top of his remarks at Locanda Verde restaurant as the crowd yelled “no.” “Too soon, right?," he said.

Oh my God the stupid burns my eyes. First of all: This is an unwelcome reminder that at least 60% of the gaffes Democrats will be defending this year will probably be coming from the mouths of celebrities. Second of all: As with most of the mistakes that will be feeding election news cycles, this is a non-issue, a dumb joke puffed up on someone's showy sense of outrage and thrown to the dogs for a few hours. It's like a little preview trailer of what the entire month of July is going to be like.
