A Macabre Animated Video from the Shins

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 9:59 AM

Another day, another new Shins video from their latest album, Port of Morrow. The new clip for "The Rifle's Spiral" might be the most impressive of an already impressive lot: an animated fantasy inspired by Edward Gorey and Martin Scorsese's Hugo. It was directed by Jamie Caliri, who also did the end credits for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and there's a similar macabre atmosphere in this video, like an illustration from a creepy bedtime story come to life.

There's a 3D version of it available, too, which you can watch on the Nintendo 3DS, if you have one handy, although I have no idea how that works.

The Shins are touring on Port of Morrow now—they play Coachella Part Deux this weekend—and while there's no Portland date set, they're playing both Bend and the Sasquatch festival on Memorial Day weekend. It's worth repeating that Port of Morrow is, while not exactly a return to form, a wonderful surprise in its own right—a sophisticated and elegant pop record, proof that Mercer has done the right thing by taking the Shins name off ice and building an excellent new band around it.
