Portland Geek Olympathon Strikes Back

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Thu, May 10, 2012 at 1:29 PM

ATTN. NERDS: the Portland Geek Olympathon returns on Saturday, May 19, allowing you and four of your nerd pals to compete against other nerds to win a bunch of prizes, from a trip for five to PAX, to passes to Critical Hit Burlesque, to a 20-sided die necklace, to—gasp—reserved seating at Trek in the Park. This is the second year the Portland Geek Council of Commerce and Culture has put on the Olympathon, and for more details I am now going to lazily cut and paste from the press release.

This year's events includes a mix of old favorites and new entries that are designed to utilize a variety of nerd skills. Competitors should be prepared to show their superior knowledge of comics, videogames, television, movies, and pop culture. Hosted by PGC3 member organizations across Portland, not all competitions will require five members, which will enable teams to split up and compete in as many events as possible.

After the day's events are over, participants will face the final competitions and be awarded prizes at the Awardathon, an epic celebration at the Eagles Lodge at 4904 SE Hawthorne from 8 p.m. to close. Here, teams will compete in a special edition of Things From Another World's Geek Trivia with Cort Webber & Bobby Roberts of “cortandfatboy” before they are awarded prizes for their performance in the Olympathon, as well as bonus awards for overall participation.

I have now done my solemn duty and informed you, the nerds of Portland, about this. You can register here. I wish all of you luck. I will not be competing, but rest assured that I could compete on my own, without any teammates, possibly even while intoxicated, and I would still be able to beat all of you. Handily. I do not know how to feel about the fact I'm bragging about this. I'm going to end this blog post.
