This Week's Magic Mike Mercury Film Section

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Fri, Jun 29, 2012 at 10:44 AM

If I could only recommend one movie this week, it'd be Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum, who I guess I'm now a huge fan of, because this and Haywire and 21 Jump Street. I can count the number of new movies that I've flat-out loved this year on one hand; Magic Mike is one of 'em. Alison Hallett's review is here, and while she's no Hallett, Manohla Dargis' review is worth a read as well:

Nobody works the crowd like Magic Mike (a terrific Channing Tatum), the gyrating main attraction in Steven Soderbergh’s funny, enjoyable romp about male strippers and the American dream. Then again, few directors can sell the goods—whether it’s Che in Cuba or Mike in a thong—as shrewdly as Mr. Soderbergh. A restive talent who toggles between big-studio and low-budget work, he has a genius for wrapping tricky ideas, like capitalism and its discontents, into commercial packages. Never before has he put them into cheek-baring chaps.

That said, there are some other movies coming out this week (movies that, for some inexplicable reason, do not focus on dudes stripping): Here are our reviews of Ted, Pink Ribbons, Inc., People Like Us, Elles, and the Portland Underground Film Festival. There are more reviews, as ever, in Film Shorts; here are Movie Times.
