Electric Lit Offers Sneak Peak of Mary Gaitskill's New Novel

Posted by Alison Hallett on Wed, Jul 18, 2012 at 11:14 AM

It's a weird excerpt—a little girl goes to hell in her dreams. Lacking the context of anything resembling reality, it's hard to know what to make of it, though at a glance it does NOT sound like the "young-adult novel about a girl and a horse" that she promised when I interviewed her a while back. Or maybe it is, just through a particularly Gaitskillian lens.

Here's an animation of one sentence from the excerpt, created by Luca Dipierro.

"Meanwhile, women came flying at him, loving him, swarming like hornets, beautiful with love, drunk with love, near-crazy with love, sick with it, buzzing all around him, looking for the beautiful soul the sensed unerringly."

Read the excerpt here.
