If You're Anti-Abortion, You Should be Pro-Birth Control

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Mon, Oct 8, 2012 at 11:58 AM

We've been through this before.

But one more time: The best way to reduce the number of abortions in America is to provide ladies free birth control.

A new study tracked 9,000 women in St. Louis who were offered their choice of free birth control. Surprise! With free access to birth control, women had way fewer pregnancies and way fewer abortions.

There were 6.3 births per 1,000 teenagers in the study. Compare that to a national rate of 34 births per 1,000 teens in 2010. There also were substantially lower rates of abortion, when compared with women in the metro area and nationally: 4.4 to 7.5 abortions per 1,000 women in the study, compared with 13.4 to 17 abortions per 1,000 women overall in the St. Louis region, Peipert calculated. That's lower than the national rate, too, which is almost 20 abortions per 1,000 women.

Why are conservatives fighting to defund the nation's largest provider of abortion-preventing birth control, again?

The other interesting thing about the study is that, since cost wasn't an issue, 75 percent of the participants chose long-term birth control methods like an IUD or an Implanon implant. Those methods are more effective than the Pill, but they way cost more up front, which is part of why only five percent of women nationally use them.
