Next Month: Hitchcock Fest at Cinema 21!

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Thu, Oct 18, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Okay, so, yes, this: Cinema 21's upcoming Hitchcock festival, with all of these in 35mm:

The 39 Steps (1935)
The Lady Vanishes (1938)
Rebecca (1940)
Notorious (1946)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Rear Window (1954)
Vertigo (1958)
North by Northwest (1959)
Psycho (1960)
Marnie (1964)

More details here. It runs a mere six days, from November 2-7, so get ready to either (A) see a lot of Hitchcock in a very short period of time, or (B) maintain your sanity and pick and choose from the lineup.

When I was a young dipshit, I remember loudly telling anyone who would listen that Hitchcock was insanely overrated; this assessment was largely based off of a single viewing of Strangers on a Train. (Like I said, I was a young dipshit.) At this point, Hitchcock's legend has largely overshadowed his films, but when he was on, he was on: The three I'd pick as must-sees from Cinema 21's lineup are Rear Window, Vertigo, and North by Northwest, though I'm biased, because Vertigo and Rear Window are two of my favorite movies, period. (On the other side of things, I've never been as impressed by Psycho as everyone else seems to be, and, stubbornly, I still don't like Strangers on a Train.) I'm bummed out Rope and The Birds aren't on here, but christ, if I'm getting to that point, I'm just complaining for complaining's sake. This fest looks fantastic. We'll have more about it in the paper once it gets closer.
