Actually, "sequel" might not be the best word—according to The Guardian, Smith plans to revisit the time period she wrote about in her excellent 2010 memoir Just Kids, which described her friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe when both were in their early 20s in New York. To read Just Kids, you'd hardly know that the woman writing it is a rock legend—it is primarily and affectingly a story of friendship and youth. The new book will approach the same time period from a different perspective, focusing more on Smith's musical career and her relationship with her late husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Just Kids is such a worthwhile read—if you haven't already, pick it up. And here's the interview I did with Smith a few years ago, when she was in Portland on book tour. She is unequivocally one of the coolest women alive.
