Goodreads to Start Selling Books?

Posted by Alison Hallett on Wed, Jan 2, 2013 at 10:44 AM

That's what Forbes writer Jeremy Greenfield predicts, citing multiple sources familiar with the site's operations.

Interesting news that makes plenty of sense, given the site's 12 million book-loving users and the frustration many feel with Amazon's corner on the online book market. I've definitely added books to my library reservation queue based on friend recommendations from Goodreads, but I've never actually purchased a book through the site's affiliates, and I'm not sure my behavior would change if I knew I was buying directly through Goodreads. Although, I'm lucky to live in a city with a strong library system and plenty of bookstores—I might feel differently if books were harder to come by, and if my loyalty to Goodreads itself were stronger. (I have now been reading Dune for 368 days, per my profile.)
