Cops Detective Who Once Saved Rabbits Cited for Off-Duty DUII

Almost exactly a year ago, the Portland Police Bureau was hailing detective Darrell Miller for his role in cracking a notorious rabbit-napping case involving a supplier for the Portland Meat Collective. But not today. The bureau just sent out word that Miller, a cop with 23 years in Portland, was arrested in Clackamas County on suspicion of driving under the influence.

On Sunday January 27, 2013, at 2:11 a.m., the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office cited off-duty Portland Police Detective Darrell Miller for DUII in Government Camp, Oregon.

Detective Miller is a 23-year-veteran of the Police Bureau and was assigned to East Precinct.

Detective Miller has been placed in an off-street assignment in the Telephone Report Unit pending the ongoing Clackamas County investigation and Police Bureau internal review process.

The Police Bureau cannot comment regarding ongoing personnel matters.

Drunk-driving charges and police jobs aren't such strange bedfellows—no surprise given the stress levels in the gig. Chief Mike Reese is known to give second chances to cops who get help, even though some have to spend time greeting visitors to Central Precinct, and it's a reminder that we should all do our part to ease whatever stigma holds anyone who needs help from seeking it out.
