Before the Internet came along and ruined everything, a student could write a stupid, embarrassing, ill-informed, and bigoted opinion piece for her college newspaper and only other students at her school would see it—and only those students who read the college newspaper, which was only a tiny percentage of students. Also, before the Internet came along and ruined everything, your stupid, embarrassing, ill-informed, and bigoted opinion piece would be forgotten in a week or two. But today every college paper has a website and your stupid, embarrassing, ill-informed, and bigoted opinion piece can go viral and follow you around for the rest of your life.
