HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Diggin it.
  • HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Diggin' it.

Tonight's the last night you'll be able to catch Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters on the big screen in Portland—the Laurelhurst has one last showing of it before their movies roll over tomorrow. I saw it again last night—the first time, I insisted Ned take me with him when he went to the press screening—and I enjoyed it just as much the second time as the first. Because it is amazing. Hyperviolent and funny, it's exactly aware enough of its own ridiculousness/awesomeness ratio to fully exploit it.

Is it a masterpiece? Of sorts. Let me put it this way: It is as close to a masterpiece as a thing can be when its title is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters screens at 9:45 tonight at the Laurelhurst (2735 E Burnside), and admission is $4, and it's an excellent film to watch with some friends and some beer. I mourn the fact it is now leaving Portland, and I wonder how I will fill my days until Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2—a film which, it so happens, I developed a rather detailed synopsis of last night, just in case you were wondering.*

*Of course you were wondering, so here, I'll give you this: It's called Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunted, and it begins with our charming siblings being targeted by an organized group of witches who're hell-bent on revenge. They also go to a big city, and—I've said too much. If you want more than that, your name better be Tommy Wirkola, Will Ferrell, or Adam McKay. (Mssrs. Wirkola, Ferrell, or McKay: I look forward to hearing from you.)
