Big Criterion Sale. So Long, Money.

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Tue, Jun 4, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Barnes & Noble's annual Criterion sale—where reliably excellent Criterion Collection DVDs and Blu-rays get marked down to around $20 a pop, instead of their usual astronomical prices, about double that—is also an annual assault on my meager checking account. Now Amazon's beating Barnes & Noble to the punch, offering 100 marked-down Criterion titles. has a list of them, and after finally pulling the trigger on three Blu-rays I've been eyeing for a while—Medium Cool, Badlands, and Godzilla—I'm stepping away from my computer before it gets any worse.

Fair warning: The list of excellent Criterion releases you can get for (relatively) cheap is pretty overwhelming, and it's hard to go wrong with any of them (except Antichrist). Videodrome, the Three Colors trilogy, Dazed and Confused, Bottle Rocket, Being John Malkovich, Cronos, Topsy-Turvy, and a whole lot more are on sale, and thanks to Criterion's exhaustive special features and top-notch audio and video, they make a powerful argument for that dying, wheezing thing known as physical media. Click at your own peril, cinephiles.
