I've attended both previous Big Floats, and you can bet your wet bottom I'm doing it again this year. Why? Because floating down the river with around 2,000 people is super fun! The water is warm-ish, the bands playing on the floating barge are cool, and a lot of people dress up and everybody's in a great mood. It's now a quintessential Portland event, which means you should have a pretty good reason for not attending.
And HEY! Here's a great way to have an even better time. Register now online, and pick up your wristbands today at Popina Hollywood (2030 NE 42nd) from 7 to 10 pm. You can sleep in on Sunday, bypass the registration tables (9 am-1 pm at Tom McCall Bowl—on the west side of the river, just south of the Hawthorne Bridge), and join the inner tube parade that marches to the put-in point (11:30 am). We'll all float down the river together, listen to some fun bands, splash around, and then have a beach party afterwards at the Tom McCall Bowl.
THAT my friends, is a goddamn PERFECT sunny summer Sunday in Portland—which refuses to be beat. SEE YOU THERE!
