You Should Go See The World's End

Posted by Paul Constant on Fri, Aug 23, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Erik Henriksen's review of The World's End in this week's paper is exactly right. It's a very funny, surprisingly moving movie that uses Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to great effect. I don't know if it's the best movie in Edgar Wright's Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy—it's been too long since I've seen Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz—but it definitely matches up nicely with the other two movies, and it makes for a very good cap to the trilogy.

So here's my point: You really should go see this movie this weekend. It's got great physical comedy, nifty special effects, characters you can't help but care about, and a solid story (even if some of the same themes have been addressed rather recently in Hot Tub Time Machine). It's an original idea that's exceptionally well-crafted (the sound design alone makes End worth a re-watch; throughout the film there are various telephony sound effects like dial tones and internet hookup noises that bolster the effects in subtle ways) and it doesn't feel like it fell out of a three-act-film-making-factory, the way most summer movies do. When there's a genuinely funny, original movie like this coming out of Hollywood, we should encourage that sort of thing. So go see The World's End. You'll have a good time, I promise.
